Composite structural optimisations in production vessels.

Structural optimisation in vessels is a common procedure carried out at BYD.
The benefits from analysing and designing laminates in more detail to find the best alternative can mean large gains in other aspects of the design and build of the vessel.

Optimising the structure can lead to:

  • Reduced structural weight for increased performance, fuel efficiency and range.
  • increased efficiency in production of the vessel.
  • More economical in material usage and wastage
  • Reduced development time and cost.
  • Gives better insight into the best laminate stacking sequence for hull and internal structure.

Recently BYD performed some structural optimisation for Dale Nelson and their new Dale 28. The aim was to streamline the structure and optimise the laminates for the hull and internals while maintaining a structure more than sufficient for passing ISO category B standards, and the high quality and durability standards which Dale Nelson possess. In the hull bottom, reductions of 11% were made, as well as 8.7% in the topsides. These optimisations will directly reflect in other aspects of the performance, range and design.
